Concrete is the second most consumed material in the world after water. LafargeHolcim (LH), as the global leader in the cement industry, considers it their responsibility to address the current climate situation. Therefore, LH has been taking steps to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) output at their plants globally since the 1970’s, and more recently in the US. This is because CO2 has been identified as a green-house-gas that traps heat and radiation in the atmosphere, which then warms the surface of the earth.
One way to reduce CO2 emissions is by eliminating the production of ASTM C150 Type I (TI), and replacing it with an ASTM C595 Type IL Portland Limestone Cement (PLC).
LH operates a plant in Alpena, MI. Alpena’s transition to Type IL(10) PLC began in December, 2021 and will be finalized in January, 2022. Once transitioned, Type IL(10) will be the sole product available at all shipping points and terminals in Michigan for LH. It should be noted that other LH terminals such as Toledo, Cleveland, and other OH based, and Great Lakes centered terminals will also house TIL PLC.
